Maths (20mins):

Our topic this week is fractions. Maths work will be posted on Mathletics, if you have any problems accessing this work please speak to the teacher for a paper copy. Please also practise your times tables. This week I need to practise my _____x tables.

Literacy (20mins): The Mayans 1. Our new history topic after half term will be The Mayans (250AD – 900AD). Over the next few weeks we would like you to research this topic and then write an information booklet about the topic. Please include: - A brief introduction to where and when the Mayans lived. - What transport the Mayans used. - How the Mayans communicated eg. Writing, drama, ceremonies. - What it would have been like to live in the Mayan time. Here are a few useful websites to get you started: http://www.ducksters.com/history/aztec_maya_inca.php http://www.mayankids.com/ Please remember to stay safe when searching online. We will provide a little time in lunchtimes for anyone without internet access. Please speak to your teacher if there are any problems. The booklet is due in after half term (24/2/17). Please spend this week doing some research and making notes.

This week we have started writing short stories to enter into our C8 schools short story competition. The children have planned their story and have started to write their first draft.

For your homework this week, we would like you to finish your first draft and return it to school on Friday 27^th January 2017.

For Maths week our theme has been witches and wizards – please try at least one of the magical problems you have been given. Please also practise your times tables. This week I need to practise my _____ x tables.

 

Literacy (20mins): On the blog, please write a conversation between two characters from Brave Rowland. Remember to use: ·         Speech marks around the words which are said. ·         Punctuation inside the speech marks. ·         A new line for each new speaker. ·         A comma to separate the speech and narrative. ·         Alternatives for said.

The Tall Tower

 

You have been imprisoned at the top of the Tall Tower by the Wicked Magician!

You can get out by climbing down the ladders. As you come down you collect useful spells.

You can go down the ladders and through the doorways into the adjoining room but you cannot go into the same room twice, nor climb up the ladders.

The numbers in the rooms show how many spells there are in each one.

Which way should you go to collect the most spells?

And which way to collect as few as possible?

Can you find a route that collects exactly 35 spells?

 

 

 

 

 

 

'Is it Magic or Is it Maths?'

Here are three 'tricks' to amaze your friends.

But the really clever trick is explaining to them why these 'tricks' are maths and not magic. Like all good magicians, you should practise by trying them. Can you explain how they work?

This trick will impress even your maths teacher.

• Think of a number.
• Double it.
• Add 10.
• Halve it.
• Take away your original number.
• Is your answer 5?

Try this with a different starting number. Did you get a different result? Why does this happen?
Write the answer on a piece of paper without letting anybody see it and seal it in an envelope. Have somebody hold the envelope and at the end ask them to open it and reveal the number you wrote at the beginning. Wow, Magic!

Can you explain how this works?

Extra Challenge   Amaze your audience by working out not only their age but also what size shoe they wear! Wow them even more by telling them how the maths works. Give them the following directions but tell them not to show you any calculations:

• Write down your age.
• Multiply it by ½ of 40.
• Add on today's date (e.g. 2 if it's the 2nd of the month).
• Multiply by ¼ of 20
• Now add on your shoe size (if it's a half size round to a whole number).
• Finally subtract 5 times today's date.
• Show me your final answer!

Look at the answer, the hundreds are the age and the remaining digits are the shoe size. If for instance somebody shows you 1105, there are 11 hundreds - the age, and the remaining digits 05 (or 5) show the shoe size.Now, how on earth does that work?
