Image result for beeIn Science we have been investigating habitats. For your homework this week we would like you to find out about bees’ habitats and try to answer the questions. There is a link to a website on your class blog to help you to get started. Read the information carefully and do some further research of your own if you can, then answer the questions below on the blog. Remember to answer in full sentences and read your work carefully before you post.

What is happening to the bees?
Why are they so important?
How can we help them?
What could we put in our garden to encourage more bees?

Spellings (20mins)
These should be practised for a short time each day, using the words given in sentences.
You need to:
 • look at each word
• say the word
• copy the word in first space
• cover the words and try to write it from memory
• check to see if they are right
Over the next few weeks, we will be revising words from the National Curriculum spelling list for Year 3 and 4. As these are words that you all need to know, there will only be one spelling list.

  1. What is happening to bees?

Bees do not pollinate corn, but the corn's pollen makes its way onto the flower and others where the bees are exposed. U.S. honey bee population. The mysterious disorder causes honey bees to disappear from their hives, and their bodies are rarely found.

    Why are they so important?

Globally there are more honey bees than other types of bee and pollinating insects, so it is the world's most important pollinator of food crops. It is estimated that one-third of the food that we consume each day relies on pollination mainly by bees, but also by other insects, birds, and bats.

How can we help Bees?/ What could we put in our garden to encourage more bees?

Plant flowers in our gardens to get more bees to come and get there pollen. A nice looking plant will make them come back to them and bring in more bees.

  2. Bees are under threat from chemicals because people use it as fertilisers and it can be harmful to insects; climate as warmer weather changes opportunities for hives are becoming; viruses this is found in beekeepers honey and habitats roads and cities may be built in between a bee hive and a flower field and this stops them pollinating. Bees are so important because 70 types of plants rely on bees and those plants make fruit or vegetables which you eat or feed animals to give you food. We can help bees by letting our grass grow long. We can encourage them by making flower beds.

  3. Bees are getting extinct, because humans are using special chemicals called pesticides. Bees are very important to us because they help us make food like honey and golden syrup and treacle. We can help bees by caring for them a lot and not killing them.We can work really hard to make beehives in our garden and then put honey or syrup in the beehive to lure the bees into their new personal beehive. As bees visit plants seeking food, pollen catches on their bodies and passes betweenplants, fertilising them – that's pollination.

What is happening to the bees?
The population of bees has shrunk as their habitat have been destroyed; climate keeps changing, also because of the viruses and the chemicals.
    Why are they so important?
They are so important as they provide us with one third of the food we eat and not only honey.
    How can we help them?
We can stop spreading chemicals and can build homes for the bees.
What could we put in gardens to encourage more bees?
We all can plant some flowers in our garden to encourage the bees to come to your garden and spread pollen.

Bees are dying from viruses and their habit of being destroyed.

Bees are so important because they make one third of your food. They make honey.

We can help bees by making bee hives and stop destroy their habit. Also we can plant more plants near them.

What we can do to get more bees in are garden is to make are garden colourful and we could plant or get more flowers in are garden. If you are lucky you could get a bee hive!

  8. Why are we talking about bees?
We are talking about bees because they provide most of the food we eat.

    Why are bees so important?
Bees spread pollen and make our gardens alive. By spreading pollen from different parts of the plant, they help the plant to grow seed, fruits and vegetables. They provide a third of the food you eat.

What is the difference between types of bees?
There are over 250 species of bees in UK. They are made of the following types:
Honey bees: They live in colonies with tens of thousands of bees in each hive. They make honey.
Solitary bees: They live alone. They help spread the pollen.
Bumble Bees: Bumble bees live in colonies like honey bees but their groups are much smaller. Male bumble bees can’t sting.

    Why bees are under threat?
The UK’s bee population is in trouble at the moment with some species disappearing completely. It is because of the insecticides used on plants/crop.
Some bee population is being attacked by viruses, their habitat is being destroyed by humans and climate change is also contributing to the fall in bee population.

    What difference do bees make?
About 70 types of plants rely on or benefit from visits from bees. Bees help to provide a lot of food by pollinating plants.

    Some facts about brilliant bees:
1.Some bees visit as many as 2000 flowers every single day.
2.Honey bees can remember landmarks. This is how they can remember where their hive is.
3.Bees flap their wings 200 times per second.
4.There are over 250 species of bees.
5.They are made of bumble bees, solitary bees and honey bees.
6.The population of bees in the UK has shrunk by a third.
7.Their habitats are being destroyed by the climate and viruses.
    8.Male bumble bees can’t sting.

What can you do to help?
You should plant more flowers and fruits in your garden so that the bees can pollinate and take nectar from them.
