Literacy (20 mins):
One of the National Curriculum objectives for Year Four is to prepare poems to read aloud. This week we would like you to choose one of the short poems below and practise it, ready for a performance next week (we will perform them in class on Friday). We will post some tips about performance poems on the blog for you to read. Try to learn at least part of your poem off by heart. If you can learn the whole poem off by heart, even better

Performance Poems Tips

Have a look on performapoem.lgfl.org.uk/ to see some good examples of poetry performances.

Before you start, read your chosen poem carefully and think about the meaning. It would be a good idea to discuss this with an adult.

Things to think about:

  • Voice projection: speaking at a good volume so everyone can hear
  • Articulation: speaking clearly so all words can be understood
  • Timing and rhythm: emphasising the rhythm of the lines, respecting punctuation, not reading too quickly
  • Mood: varying tone of voice, volume etc to suit happy / sad bits of a poem
  • Facial expression: using expressions to suit different parts of the poem
  • Gesture: emphasising or echoing the meaning of the poem with hand gestures
Good luck!

Reading (every day):
Please write in your reading diary when you have read.
You will have been allocated a Bug Club book to read at home, which will be different to the one that you are reading in school. Check with your teacher if you are not sure which one is which. Don’t forget to answer the ‘bugs’- look out for them on each page!
Maths (20mins):
Our topic this week is division. Maths work will be posted on Mathletics. If you have any problems accessing this work please speak to the teacher for a paper copy.
Please also practise your times tables. This week I need to practise my ______ x tables.
Spellings (20mins):
These  should be practised for a short time each day, using the words given in sentences.
You need to:
 • look at each word
• say the word
• copy the word in first space
• cover the words and try to write it from memory
• check to see if they are right
This week your spellings all contain the topic words you will need for our science lessons. Look up the meanings and try to use them in a sentence.
